The Jacobs Nederland,
B.V. SUPERCLAUS®
technology has been provided by Goar, Allison & Associates, Inc. to
several facilities in North America.
Two main principles were
applied in designing the SUPERCLAUS process
 |
operating the Claus
plant with excess H2S to suppress the S02 content in the Claus tail
gas. Alternatively hydrogenation of Claus tail gas to convert all
sulphur components to H2S; |
 |
selective oxidation of
the remaining H2S in the Claus tail gas by means of special catalyst
which should efficiently convert the remaining H2S in the presence of
water vapor and excess oxygen to elemental sulphur only. |
The SUPERCLAUS catalyst
indeed possesses some unique properties
 |
oxidation of H2S to
sulphur is complete; no sensitivity to water vapour; |
 |
further oxidation to
S02 is negligible even in the presence of excess oxygen; |
 |
components such as H2,
CO and other combustibles are not affected; |
 |
the catalyst does not
establish the Claus equilibrium reaction. |
The SUPERCLAUS
process consists of a thermal stage followed by three of four catalytic
reaction stages. The first two or three reactors
are filled with standard Claus catalyst while the last reactor is filled
with the selective oxidation catalyst. In the thermal stage the acid gas
is burnt with a substoichiometric amount of controlled combustion air such
that the tail gas leaving the second reactor contains 0.8 to1 .5 vol. % of
H2S.
The catalyst in the last
reactor (selective oxidation reactor) oxidizes the H2S to sulphur (H2S +
1/2 02 -->.S + H20) at a very high efficiency. Because the catalyst
neither oxidizes H2S to S02 and H20, nor reverses the reaction of sulphur
and water to H2S and So2, a total sulphur recovery rate in the range of
99% can be obtained, depending on Claus Feed Gas composition.
